The premises of the museum were formerly the “Bacteriology Laboratory” and the “Hong Kong Academy of Pathology”, which were later repurposed for current purposes.
The exhibition hall retains the laboratory furnishings when the Bacteriological Laboratory was opened in 1906, and even the faucets on the ceramic basins are probably original. The Bacteriological Laboratory is the first clinical and public health laboratory in Hong Kong. At the time, its facilities were considered comparable to some of the best laboratories in Europe. What is on display is that students from the Hong Kong Chinese Western Medicine College are dissecting rats to monitor the plague. In addition, some other tasks of the laboratory are also displayed, such as water quality inspection and malaria monitoring.
